Autosomal DNA Testing

Autosomal DNA Testing

An Autsomal DNA Tutorial as it relates to genealogy.

In 2020 the Project was expanded to include assisting people with the surname with the analysis of Autosomal DNA to make family connections. Because of the limitations of Autosomal DNA (it gets diluted by 50% with each generation), it is only accurate for about 5 generations. For some people, however, this is all they need. We’ve also found that if your family tree is well documented you can use the DNA data to assist in making connections further back than 5 generations. We’ve had extraordinary results, primarily in identifying the ancestors of some South Carolina slave descendants.

Though FamilyTreeDNA also does Autosomal testing, we recommend Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com/) as their results are more refined.
