Family History

Early Herriott history starts in Scotland and the name is still common in the Edinburgh area. David Herriott emigrated from Scotland to America in 1685 but whether or not he came on the Henry and Francis is unclear. He settled in New Jersey and has many descendants in America today, the so-called New Jersey line. There have been a number of other Herriotts emigrate to America. These include the Heriots of South Carolina  whose ancestors (Robert and William Heriot) emigrated from Scotland in the middle of the 18th century. We also have identified a line of Herriotts who came to America in the 18th century after first passing through Ireland. William John Herriott is considered the progenitor of the Belfast line in America. He came with his family from Belfast, Ireland to Boston in 1867, then to Chicago on June 21, 1877. HIs descendants have been dubbed our Belfast line.  The SC Heriot line’s and Belfast line’s genealogies may be found under our Family Genealogies.  Herriotts are also found throughout the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia
